WBCS Notification 2025: Detailed Guide

The West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) releases the notification for the WBCS Civil Service Exam annually, typically in November or December. The WBPSC WBCS 2025 Notification is expected to be published soon and will include essential details such as:

  • Number of vacancies
  • Application start and end dates
  • Exam schedule

Recently, the WBPSC conducted the W.B.C.S. (Exe.) (Main) Examination, 2023 on 16th, 17th, 18th, and 20th August 2024 in Kolkata. The results for the WBCS Mains 2023 Exam are expected to be declared in April 2025.

Additionally, the WBCS Prelims 2024 Exam is anticipated to take place on 7th September 2025.

WBCS Selection Process 2025

The selection process for the WBCS Exam 2025 consists of three stages:

  • Preliminary Examination:
  • One objective paper on General Studies.
  • No Aptitude Test, unlike other state Public Service Commission exams.
  • Mains Examination:
  • Includes six compulsory papers and one optional subject (comprising two papers).
  • Four of the six compulsory papers are MCQ-based:
  • General Studies I
  • General Studies II
  • Constitution of India and Indian Economy (including RBI functions)
  • Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning
  • Optional subjects are mandatory for candidates applying for Group A and Group B services.
  • Deduction of 10% marks if the candidate’s identity is revealed.
  • Personality Test:
  • Conducted for candidates who qualify in the Mains.
  • Evaluates mental and analytical abilities.

1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

  • The Prelims stage is the first stage of the WBCS exam 
  • It consists of one General Studies (GS) paper.
  • The paper is of objective type, meaning multiple-choice questions will be asked
  • The purpose of the Prelims exam is to assess the basic knowledge of candidates.
  • Candidates should focus on general topics and are not required to specialize in any specific subject.
  • Wrong answers will result in negative marking.

2. Main Examination (Mains)

Only candidates who clear the Prelims exam are eligible for the Main Exam.

  • The Mains exam consists of both objective and subjective type questions.
  • There are several papers in the Mains exam, including compulsory papers and optional papers (based on the subjects chosen by the candidates).
  • Compulsory papers typically cover subjects like English composition, general studies, and more.
  • Optional papers are based on the subjects selected by candidates during the application process.

The Mains exam assesses the candidates’ in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subjects included in the syllabus.

3. WBCS Personality Test (Interview Round)

Candidates who successfully clear the WBCS Mains Exam are invited to participate in the final stage, known as the Interview Round.
