UPSC normally releases their entire calendar for the next year in the month of November of the previous year. From that calendar any student can come to know when the detailed notification for civil services examination will be released. Normally, this notification for Civil Services comes in the month of February of the year of examination.

RICE offers two types of courses:
- Regular course for students who have completed graduation / post-graduation
- Week-end course for working professionals or students undergoing graduation or post-graduation.
- For regular course, classes are held on four days a week to start with. After some progress one more day is added to the schedule which is devoted exclusively to mock tests. The papers of these tests are examined by the faculty and necessary guidance is imparted to the students so that they can improve upon their previous performance. A mentoring system is also in place wherein the performance of the students is judged on a continuous basis so as to enable them know all by themselves where they lack and how, on their own, they can build upon their previous performances.
- Classes are held for 6 hours a day for all the 4 days. Of these, 5 hours are set aside for teaching of optional subjects when, naturally, separate classes are held for different optional subjects. RICE offers 4 optional subjects – History, Geography, Sociology and Political Science & International Relations.
- For the weekend classes, the students are exposed to the entire syllabus of UPSC gradually. The pace is hastened up as they grow in confidence. As for the teaching of optional subjects of these students, they are to attend the optional subjects along with the students of the general course.
The format of Civil Services examination is divided into the Preliminary Examination, the Main Examination and the Personal Interview.
Preliminary Examination: A candidate has to appear in 2 subjects – General Studies and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). Each consists of 200 marks & exam duration is 2 hours. CSAT is a qualifying paper only. One has to secure one-third of total marks to qualify in CSAT.
CSAT has normally three portions:
- Reading Comprehension & Answering Questions
- Mathematics (upto Class X level)
- General Intelligence covering numerical reasoning, logical reasoning etc.
General Studies:
- It’s a screening test to qualify for the Main examination. There are 100 questions of 2 marks each. GS syllabus covers many areas such as Indian History & Geography, Indian National Movement, Constitution & Polity, Ecology etc.
Main Examination: It has 2 parts. The qualifying part includes examination in 2 papers-English & any mother tongue / any language included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Only after a candidate secures the qualifying marks in these 2 papers, his / her answer copies of other subjects will be checked.
The main part of the Main examination consists of 7 papers of 250 marks each. GS occupies the most important position in the Mains Examination. There are 4 papers in GS (GS-I to GS-IV). Therefore, the total marks in the Mains Examination for General Studies is 1000.
One has to take any one Optional subject out of the list of subjects offered by UPSC. The optional subject has 2 papers (I &II), consisting of 250 marks each.
The last subject of the mains examination is Essay Writing, containing 250 marks. 2 essays are to be written, each of 125 marks. The topics of the essays are divided into 2 groups. In each group, 4 topics are given. A candidate has to choose 1 topic from each group but not 2 topics from the same group.
Thus the total marks of Main examination is 1750 (7*250)
Personal Interaction: Based on the performance of the candidate in Main examination, only a certain number of candidates are called for personal interaction. These numbers vary every year & depends on the number of vacancies for the year. The marks for personal interaction is 275. It may be noted that no further examination of the knowledge of the candidate is checked at the personal interaction level. It chiefly aims assessing personality, composure, integrity & other such attributes.
Thus, total marks of UPSC civil service examination, other than the preliminary examination, is 2025 (1750 + 275). Based on the marks obtained by the candidate out of this 2025, rankings are made and as per the rank, and choice given by the candidate while filling up the form in Main examination, a service is offered. For the most coveted services like IAS, IPS, IFS, a rank within the 1st 200 is normally required.
- Regular course is of 14 months
- Weekend course is of 36 months.
